Vegan motivation

Don't think of it as harping. Think of it as heavy-duty sharing.

We watched a fun video last night, and it wasn't even "fun" with quotation marks. Dr. Michael Greger runs down the top 15 causes of death in the U.S.; he runs them down with plants and current research.

He's funny and interesting, and he makes the science accessible. I can muck my way through a paper, but it takes it out of me.

He says things that you won't hear a lot of doctors saying, like (spoiler alert) prescription drug side-effects - not misuse, just side-effects - are the 6th-leading cause of death in the United States. Filling a prescription and taking it exactly the way we're directed. If our lunch can keep us from needing prescriptions, why not eat it?

Can we just exercise more and eat what we want? Watch and find out.

What happens immediately after we eat an animal-based meal? Watch and find out.

I got the link from the Happy Healthy Long Life lady. She's another good and accessible source of food research.

If you're leaning toward trying a plant-based (vegan) diet, give it a look. It's more fun than that re-run you were about to suffer through.

If you're already vegan, but sometimes feel like a soymon swimming upstream, definitely watch this.

Sandie raises a point worth amplifying. Is there any point to eating fewer animal products? Of course! This fellow makes a great case for losing one meat-based meal a week. USDA, bite my tail feathers.

A great video even for us meat eaters. Does make me want to have a few vegan meals though so we may have to work on that.

Having been a vegetarian since 1976 and vegan since 1993, I know the health benefits of eating a plant based diet. In fact, because of you, I am just finishing a juice reboot. Wonderful. Even if it means running to the store every other day, I will still continue. And even in New Orleans, where folks don't even know the meaning of the word, vegan, I will continue.

Go Jan! No, NOLA didn't strike me as the Health Capital. Or the raw vegetable capital. It's good we can have online communities.

Yeah, Sandie! I read something recently that laid out how many thousands of gallons of water, pounds of grain, etc. are saved with one vegan meal. Plus the break it gives your body.

I have watched Forks Over Knives multiple times (well I own it) and have INTENDED to watch your other recommendations. But the only one I can remember is Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. But TONIGHT, I'm going to watch this one. I promise (cross my heart and all that). You guys are great evangalists and I know a little church you could appropriate with a nice pulpit that Annie looks great standing at.....no no at which Annie looks great standing. Keep the info coming. You are more motivating than you know.

But wouldn't she be preaching to the choir? :D That's the sort of thing up with which we must put.

You'll like it, cross my heart. ♥

Having been a vegetarian then vegan for a while I have to say it's not for everyone. I finally went back to meat after getting very sick and I'm glad I did.

I think the smart thing to do is figure out what works for YOUR body then do that.

PS Fast food doesn't work for any body type :)

Right, I got the impression from your blog that you might eat lots of grass-fed meat - or did I invent that? Yes, we have to find what keeps us healthy. I just think that most of us don't really "find" an eating style as much as we default to the standard American diet and assume that's what's best. Which is sad, because we never know how good we might feel eating another way.

I'm not even sure fast food should be called food.

I started to watch the video, but ended up falling asleep. NO, the video wasn't boring, I just felt kind of nappy. : ) I'll try again!

I watched and I did like it, cross my heart. And I'm going to look at his other things. Love that he's bringing nutrition research to the masses and that there is so much nutrition research. Who knew??? THANK YOU!!

I did NOT know. I'm a new fan.

Thought provoking. I'm very disturbed by the information about chicken. It is my "go to meat." I guess I'll just have to keep working on less until I get to none.

Funny though, if my husband suddenly decided to try Vegan we would. It's just to hard to have two completely different menus all of the time. For now he rarely has red meat because I don't cook it for us.

Maybe there will be more plant base meals around here in the future.

Merikay, I think that puts you in the catbird seat! [I don't know what that is, but it's apparently a seat of control.] Some people I know give themselves permission to relax their diet when they go out, and that could be a time when Craig orders whatever he wants. Yes, I was surprised to hear that chicken was SO bad.

Excellent video and speaker. Love his humor. And the info is rather scary, as a light weight meat eater. I reduced red meat years ago thinking chicken was better for me. Whoa... how wrong I was. I know I don't eat enough plants. And being in the middle of gorgeous nowhere doesn't make them real available. I'm also a Very lazy cook. Need to look into some possibilities. Thanks for sharing this.

I don't think we'll ever be vegan but we try to do several meatless days a week. I do think more fruits and veggies are important and we are trying lots of different things and I am learning how to cook differently. I also agree that avoiding prescription meds if you can is the way to go but not always possible for everyone.

The Good Luck Duck said...

Gaelyn, it would be easier if we could eat the Ponderosa pines. Where do you go for big grocery shopping? Chicken was sold to us as the "healthy meat." I ate it for years and years thinking I was doing the right thing, fed it to my son regularly. I am such a lazy cook now that I don't. If I can't eat it as it comes out of the refrigerator, it's not getting eaten.

Janie, it's not possible for everyone to avoid Rx meds. But, if I can do it by modifying my diet, I'm gonna! Several meatless days a week is big.

Ya, ya, ya! I do like reading about Vegan lifestyles (i.e. diets) even though I know that at 68 yrs. old, I'm not going to change.

It does seem to become a bit of a crusade with those who adopt it though. Then again, I posted a pic of a salmon burger and a bacon and cheeseburger in by blog today. Does than make me an anti-vegan? I wonder?

The Good Luck Duck said...

I don't see it making you anti-vegan any more than I am anti-omnivore. We talk about what interests, us, yeah? I mean, I do read a lot of people saying "then it was steak night," or "I made chicken on the grill," but that's sort of the default for most people. That doesn't seem radical at all, but saying "I ate lots of plants again tonight" sounds like some crazy fringe activity.

Plus, I think the evangelism comes from feeling so much better so quickly, after maybe feeling marginal for decades. We go "HOLY CRAP EVERYONE MUST KNOW!!" I like to think it's altruism. :D

Just finished watching the video. I'm with you on the HC Everyone must know!! Sent the link to everyone I know. I was on the fence thinking I can not go vegan, but those stats are impressive. I for one, know it worked for me on my BP in just 11 days!!! Still going strong and feeling great. Thanks for that link!!!

The Good Luck Duck said...

For what it's worth, Harriet, you're looking great, too. Not that that's the whole point, but it's a nice side-effect. And, you're very welcome.

Our daughter shared Forks over Knives DVD and book with us. What an eye opener! We have been on a plant based eating routine for just over a month. John was feeling weak and dizzy, I took his blood pressure and it was way too low. So he did not take his B.P. meds and I tracked his B.P. It came up to normal! Dr. took him off the medication for B.P. I am finding that I have more energy and my walking distance has gone from 2 miles at a time to over 4 and I am ready to increase the distance again!

With the scientific evidence out there about moving to a whole foods plant based diet, it is certainly hard to refute. I didn't think my husband would ever agree to working towards this way of eating but have to say that he is really enjoying it and is feeling much better in the process. We are not 100% vegan yet (is that cheating?) but very close. Have you two bought any good vegan cookbooks that you can recommend? That is my only challenge right now, keeping things interesting. Thanks for the tip on the video. BTW - you two look fabulous so I know it's working for you!

The Good Luck Duck said...

Nan, John went off BP meds in a month?? That's awesome. And that your endurance has shot up so quickly is amazing, too.

Paint, that's great! I don't think there's such a thing as cheating. We don't have any vegan cookbooks, but Annie makes some great stuff. When she wants a new recipe, she Googles "easy vegan recipes," or something similar. And, THANKS!

Nearest shopping is Kanab, UT 85 miles one way for two dinky stores. Then Page at 128 miles. Sometimes St George at even more.
