This is worth seeing, because you're here and because it's free. I'm not big on Westerns - always wondering when they last saw a washcloth - but there are original sets that you may recognize if you're a fan. I've probably even seen The Outlaw Josey Wales. His chair was not on display.

Even more interesting is the line of Prison Blues clothing sold in the store. I won't pay $40 for a pair of jeans until I pass GO on my dog, but they feel sturdier than Levi's. Oregonians, tell me more about this program, if you know more. Russ, make something up. There's no fact-checker here. My questions are, do the profits from these items relieve taxpayers' burdens? Or, does a private prison company reap the rewards?

I've never read anyone suggesting free podcasts as entertainment on the road, so I'm stepping up. There are first-rate podcasts available for nothing. Load up while you're somewhere with wifi.

I love wait wait - always try to listen to it. No chair? oh I'm so disappointed.
I wish I liked podcasts. I really do. But my attention span is not made for it. I can read all day long. I can listen to music all day long. But I just cannot listen to recorded speaking for more than five minutes (that might be stretching it actually). So sadly, audio books and podcasts are not my friends. :(
Getta' long little doggies. Of course all the statues in town are male, think about where you are. ;) Wonder if there will be a hangin' outside of town.

I have to agree with Brenda on the listening thing. My problem came from a Dad who would talk to you until he was blue in the face about what you did wrong. He didn't believe in hitting. So I learned to tune out. Still do it when a voice drones on. LOL
I download audiobooks from my library and transfer them to my MP3 player. Right now it's completely full - I listen to them during the day while I'm doing other things. I have a small speaker that I plug the MP3 into - I got it at Walmart. I can put the player and speakers near me when I'm driving, or use ear thingies, when I'm driving if I want to listen. OR I could transfer them to a DVD and put it in the dash player.
Too many places along the road don't have a good radio signal, so the audio books are great.
I downloaded the podcasts from Leo LaPorte, the computer guy on the radio, and also from a RVing couple that recorded podcasts - can't find it now. Lots of radio talk shows do pod casts, and you can transfer them.
I'm going to check out the ones you show. :)

Barbara, I really love the voice, and love to listen to whatever. My library doesn't offer a lot of audiobooks for Mac, so I haven't done that yet.
Ha, Jojo, I had a droner dad, too, but he also believed in hitting as Plan B, so it wasn't safe to tune out. :D

We love it, too, Mary. If I wait too long to listen to an episode I've forgotten the topical nature of the comedy, so fresh is best.

I like dharma talk podcasts. There are several American Buddhist temples that offer these, and they're free.
I can't listen to those people who narrate audiobooks. For some reason their voices make me cringe - like fingernails on a chalkboard. Maybe it's because when reading a book I can give each character a different voice.
Rick, I agree I don't always agree with the voice. I got hold of a recording of Margaret Atwood reading her own poems. I hesitate to say this, because I think Atwood is some kind of god, but her voice was so awful that I deleted the whole thing.

Nina, I am both terrified and intrigued. I do eye the Monday night westerns as we pass the theater, and think it would at least be something new to do. I might end up liking it, and THEN what?

Seminars, as long as I am actually in attendance OR in video format, are fine. Ummm....depending on the subject matter anyway! It's just having a voice speaking with no face to hold my attention that is the issue. No face and my mind just drifts somewhere else. Guess I'm either complicated or weird. You pick. :)
The kids bought me a tiny iPod, but I have problems with the earphones, they hurt my ears. I did buy a little speaker for it, or I can plug it into my dashboard - but the kids loaded songs on it and I don't feel like learning how to do it - even though it is probably super simple to do. Maybe some day...then I could sew and listen at the same time. Are there apps for podcasts? I do listen to the radio through my iPhone - no earphones or extra speaker needed.
We love This American Life, too, and just recently fell in love with The Moth. Vegan Freaks was a great podcast, which I wish was still around.
Teri, I don't think you need any apps to use podcasts. For example, those sites I mentioned tell you how to download with whatever you use (I use iTunes). Once they're on your computer, you can just drag them to your hooked-up device.
I can't use those standard earphones, either. I need the kind with little flexible pieces for ear comfort.
Molly, people who know me well assured me I would love The Moth, and I just can't. I have zero idea why. I should love it. But, yes, I have heard lots of good things about it.

Russ conked out and went to bed so you are stuck with his BETTER half!! As I understand it, all state prisons are run by private enterprise here is Oregon (as are the rest areas!). I sincerely doubt that the state gets more than a token amount from the sales of these items (if any). Since I am no authority on prisons and how they work, this is a best guess. However, do not come here and attempt to "do time" and find out for yourself. We regularly announce on the front page of the local paper that the jails and prisons are full and so certain crimes will not be prosecuted. We call these the special of the month. This month it is house break-ins so come on up and help yourself to someone's household goods for free. You will not go to jail. OOOPS, this is starting to sound like a soap box so I'll just quit now!!

So, the Prison Blues company gets below-minimum-wage workers (I presume they get some token amount of money), pays the private prison industry for being middleman, and pockets everything else. So, being Made in America is of no particular value to anyone in this equation. See, there's a good reason I always buy used _____!

I like the Satellite Sisters pod casts. I find myself laughing in the car and getting very strange looks from other drivers. My iPhone bluetooths to the car radio.
Did a 5 hour trip down to PA from NY and 5+ hour trip back home listening to "Like Water For Elephants". I'm in my 60's and my first audio experience listening to a book on CD. The book was so well done that I kept missing my exits and the trip turned out being a bit longer. Had to sit in my parked car several times to listen to the end of a chapter. I highly recommend it. Can't figure out my Ipod given to me as a gift.

Anon, I'm glad to hear the audio version is so satisfying. I really enjoyed the book. I do get a little mesmerized by voice, if it's good, so I won't try it while driving. :D

Very true. Most Moms (and Dads) do worry. Now I have a different (but not bad) situation with her: she wants to come too. Not in her own rig but literally with us, in ours.
