I'm giving my feet a spa treatment.
What does that mean - you're gonna wash them?
Blogger meet-up
We met the wandering Desert Diva, and her faithful sidekick, Cali. Cheryl took the time to visit with us for two days, and we all saw the sights and heard the hears. Annie and I had a great time, and Cheryl and Cali were gracious enough to pretend the same.
Our clutter terrified her. |
She drives a 22' Toyhome, and we admired its agility and gas mileage. And its cute-itude.
Pigs love apples - a cautionary tail
Arnold |
Emily, the odd pig |
Annie and Cherry |
Saturday morning was Pig Time! We saw an oinkientation video, then Adria let us take pigs for a stroll.
Pigs walk very slowly. Annie demonstrates the promise of apple chips to keep Cherry moving.
Arnold and I got ahead of these two, because he had places to go. My job was just to keep Arnold out of the apples.
Where our walk went south. |
- Pigs are stubborn.
- When pigs see free apples, pigs are no longer tempted by apple chips.
- Pigs love apples.
- Pigs remember where they last found apples.
- Pigs know what I forgot: pigs will bite right through a pig-walker to get to apples.
- Pigs don't care if a pig-walker wets herself.
Arnold was out of control, and Annie with the radio was far away. I had to shatter the bucolic silence to get her to call for help. I was powerless against Arnold and his apple jones.
Adria apologized profusely for Arnold's atrocious behavior, but it was all good. A pig bit me! It's a badge of honor, like receiving the Purple Snout.

Later, we just cleaned up their pens and filled their mud baths and scritched bellies. Arnold and I made up: I rubbed his belly, and he let me.
Pig trivia:
- Female pigs can get pregnant at 3 months
- Male pigs start to breed at 6 weeks.
- There is no such thing as a micro, teacup, or pocket pig. There are just undernourished piglets, or baby pigs having baby pigs.
Our Best Friends Piggy Paradise review? Four trotters up!
Zion National Park
We made a day trip to Zion to see things.
Desert bighorn sheep. |
Roxi showering at Weeping Rock. |
Jennifer Beals showering at Weeping Rock |
Pavement bighorn sheep |
This trail seemed like such a good idea. |
If you get here later than mid-morning, cruise on through and park in Springdale. You'll catch a free shuttle up to the park boundary, then walk across and show your receipt (or your Interagency Pass). A shuttle bus will take you through the scenic route at the bottom of the canyon, and lets you disembark wherever you'd like.

Roxi, you are brave. Both walking a pig and that trail.
OK this is all too funny - purple snout. ROTFL!! So you're no match for a pig huh?
Which one is more beautiful under the water? Roxi/Jennifer? Jennifer/Roxi?? Sorry, too close to call.
No wonder I saw hardly any big horn sheep, you two hogged them all. hahahahaha
Where is the pic of this darling 22' toyhouse? Guess I'll just wander on over to Diva's blog and find out. Don't you all go away now.
Great pictures but that one of the wood was really amazing. Hope you have recovered from your pig injury. Do you have bite marks?
Going to do this for sure.Thinking about doing a time share in Las Vegas and make a day trip to Zion.
Great pics and thanks the shuttle tip.
Thanks, Gaelyn! You know what a chicken-heart I am about heights.
Sherry, I thought it might be a good idea to label the water shots - too easy to get us confused. HAH! "Hogged."
LD2, Arnold didn't break the skin, but there's a good reason they require long pants for pig duty! I have a little souvenir bruise, and I'm just fine.
Joe, from Las Vegas you'd be coming in through Springdale first, right? Yeah, easier to just park there right off the bat. Cute little town, lots of shopping, if you guys like that, and many places to eat.
The Jennifer Beals shot must have been PhotoShopped. Roxanne, you are the real deal and that's way more beautiful.
Thanks, Sue! I like the way you think, but you knew that.
I don't know why my Ereader quit sending me your blog and a few others. But, it's cured and I'm now getting my serving of Duck. Great post.
you guys rock, you are living my dream, rock on!!!
Congrats on your earning the Purple Snout! What an honor. My guess is that Arnold intended to only send you a message and did not intend serious hurt, or you would have been much worse off. An in his defense, we are rather fragile since we have no protective fur like most animals.
Oh boy, another blog to go check out.
I loved seeing the pictures & hearing about the pigs. Although I adore all animals, pigs are in my top favorite. There's just something about them, even though they can get bitey. :)
Did you happen to hike on Angel's Landing at all? We made it to the top when we were there, but I did not go on to where it was treacherous. Mike did & I waited for him, terrified that he was making me a widow after only a few weeks of being married.
Going to go check out Cheryl's blog now!
OUCH, biting piggies! Well that little bad potbelly! I didn't know they can breed so young -- wow! Did ya scritch the bellies on the sheepies too? ;-)
And you are certifiable. No one in their right mind walks that kind of trail! Yikes! I'd rather get pig bit!
Cyn, I agree with your assessment. I was terrified more than once on that trail, and it was so innocuous-looking to start. The sheeps told us we were lucky just to be lookin' at 'em, so we didn't push our luck.
They do have a certain je ne sais quoi, Molly, but I don't know what it is. We heard about Angel's Landing on the bus tour, so we laughed at that option. Glad Mike didn't widowize you before you were ready.
Yeah, Mary, and I got the message loud and clear. It was a quick series of messages sent lightning-fast - Morse code for give me my apples, bitch. I had been grumbling about wearing jeans in the heat, but they turned out to be helpful protective fur after all. I wasn't mad at him, even in the heat of bite. I've bitten people who came between me and my apples, too.
Ha! Thanks, Helen!
Thank goodness, Pat! Bad e-reader! Thanks for finding us again.
The kind of trail that they put those chains in the rock so you have something to hold onto for dear life? Oh hellll noooooooooooo. Which trail was that so I know to avoid it? We love Zion.....but don't want to wander onto THAT trail!
Once I got past the clutter I was admiring the fruit/veggie basket hanging from between your upper cabinets. Kind of hoping we can make that work in our RV.
Thanks for showering shots! Both of them!!! :)
Chains would have been good, Brenda. I was clinging to grass. This trail was short, and they called it "moderate," which it was in exertion, but it should have been rated "OMG" for terror. When the old guy with the walker came by with his pregnant granddaughter carrying a toddler, I pushed them off in frustration.
That basket works pretty well. We rest it in the sink in transit. And, you're welcome! :D
Love, love, love the sheep pictures, lucky you to get to see them & get GOOD pics. Pig pictures cute too. Always enjoy your stories!!!
Zion Rocks!
You guys were having too much fun with pigs!
Great pics of the sheep too!
The sheep shots were pure dumb luck. I said "ooh, look - goats!" and took their pictures.
Rick, I think it really was too much fun!
Teresa, it seriously does.
Thanks, Loree!
Fun time with the pigs !!! Wow, you saw a lot of bighorn sheep !! Great !! Dont leave out Bryce canyon !! Another magical place to visit !!
You bums...you saw bighorn sheep!! I've been looking for those animals for 2 years and still haven't managed to photograph a male. Most jealous, am I....
Lovely shots!
Nina
We did, Nina! I guess the trick is not to look for them, or even have the good sense to know they might be just where you are.
Sue, I'm afraid if we keep exploring Utah, we'll never get back to Arizona. I love it here...until the first hard freeze.
Oh my, a pig bite!! That can't be any fun, but it was fun to read about it. I guess that would be a pork chomp.
And I loved all the pictures of Zion and the sheep . I REally, REAlly, REALLY want to go see the Utah parks someday.
I was there after the "season" and didn't have to take the shuttle... I could drive in wherever I wanted. I visited Weeping Rock too... and I also climbed up to the
Emerald Pools... a real challenge for me then, might be easier now. But loved the fall colors - https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=fa7f0182e87d65cf&id=FA7F0182E87D65CF%21185 .
Well, that link didn't post right... try this one... and down toward the bottom of the blog post is a photo album of Zion. http://swankiewheels.blogspot.com/2009/10/zion-park-and-st-george-ut.html
So why doesn't your blog create links???
Copy and paste folks.
My Zion visit was Nov 2009 and Utah was the 8th state I kayaked.
Hahaha Donna! While he was biting me, I wasn't believing what I was feeling, and when he stopped I got giggly.
Swankie, nice pics! If you want links, you have to make them yourself, like Swankie's Zion pictures.
I got bitten by one of our sheep trying to shove a pill down her throat. She thought I was trying to feed her my fingers, I guess! Ouch! Enjoy Zion, ladies, you guys are looking great out there on the trail.
OW Pam! Fingers are more delicate than my cankles!
I cant believe you walked that trail. Good going. The photos say it all. You got some great shots. Good luck on your next adventure.
