You can see by the little notch on Mao's right ear that she was a community cat once. She has renounced that risky and lonely lifestyle in favor of living in the lap.
I'm also petting a neighbor's garden while she's away. Plants around here are looking kind of wilty; someone should water them.
Two things that grow like weeds here in the desert are two desert weeds:
This little pigweed went to - oh, it's too gruesome. I can't say it. |
Chenopodium giganteum, post-mortem |
This guy is call Tree spinach, or Magenta spreen, or giant lambsquarters. I call it just in time for dinner with beans. This stuff grows in forests here, and is also considered invasive. Plant your own invasive garden! Or read about it.
Both of these veggies, like spinach, have some oxalate (oxalic acid). If you make oxalate stones like crazy, maybe choose another veggie and drink some water.
The pictures you see above turned into a giant green smoothie with soy milk, flaxseed, blueberries and bananas. Kitchens can be fun!
This morning I hung a load of laundry on the line. Ah, homely pleasures.
I'll get on the road soon enough, but for now, I'm enjoying the borrowed pleasures of someone else's home and feeling pretty good about it.

Cats and fresh green veggies. What more do you need?
Cats, fresh green veggies, and a few crazy friends in TorC! Sure enjoyed our Scrabblerama yesterday. Glad you're gardenpetting and catsquirting in my neighborhood.
A roof, shower and good food, what more could you ask for.
I quit putting spinach in my smoothies awhile back because of those pesky oaxalates. I started using kale instead. Then I found out raw kale is goiterous. So I quit that too. But I miss having greens in my smoothies. So I think I've decided none of these things is going to kill me within moderation. Bring on the green smoothies!!!
Brenda, I would think in Florida you'd get enough iodine to overcome the goiterogenic qualities of food, especially if you're eating seafood. But, what do I know? And, yes, I agree. If you ate nothing else I'd have to run out there with some seaweed and a big glass of water for you, but otherwise I'll just chill.
Absolutely, Gaelyn. My sentiments exactly. Plus the cats.
Me too, Sue, to those things!
Gayle, it's a veritable cornucopia.
We'll be leaving Texas soon and heading over to Socorro before heading up to ABQ and Farmington. I'm realistic enough to know that a trip down to TorC isn't gonna happen, but.... RATS!... I'd sure love to meet you... your blog is one of my favorites.
Don't add the cat to the smoothie. "The pictures you see above turned into a giant green smoothie..."
Love smoothies but I use water instead of milk.
TOO LATE! *ulp hackhackhackURP*
Aw, thank you, Sharon! I'd like to meet you, too, and I'm also realistic enough to know that this sofa is too comfy for me to leave willingly.
That pic is not pigweed! It's purslane. Pigweed is in the amaranth family and looks nothing like purslane and is even more invasive. I have found a tamed purslane with much bigger prettier flowers and the same fleshy succulent leaves for my salads.
Most cats decline soaking. Plants don't care whether you pet or soak them. Pretty kitty!
Pigweed can be a Portulaca (which purslane is), or amaranth, or Chenopodium (the genus of the magenta spreen). It seems to be a general term. Does your tame purslane stay aggressive and self-sufficient like the wild kin?
Pass that smoothie over here. I think even I could do your tough job. I wonder if you'll ever go back on the road with free backyard food AND cats to pet.
Lol, Sherry! Well, these people are very nice, but they might eventually want to use my bedroom and would notice the lump in their spare bed. So, yes. Probably I will.
Cool beans... um, wait a sec. Whatz that about oxalate? I like spinach in my smoothies. I get all my oxidations or maybe it's antioxidations to keep me healthy. Er, I mean, my oxymorons to ward off vampires. I think I got that right. Right?
Whoo GIRLfriend, you got it ALL goin' on. I don't even think you need vegetables.
Nice Gig, maybe you can get more like it across the country. That would be fun !!
Been doing smoothies ( I just call em shakes) for about a year Jeanie's Arthritis doc suggested that she do extra protein because the inflammation ate up a lot of protein. I said what the heck if it works for her it will work for me so I started doing one for breakfast. one small apple, 3 strawberries, a banana, 1/3 cup.raw rolled oats, 3 tablespoon flax seed meal, a kale leaf, 27 grams of protein and a cup of spring water. Jeanie didn't do well with the whey so she switched to a clif builders bar with 20 grams of protein for breakfast.
I was running out of steam about 4 P.M. so I started doing a protein bar about 3 and what a difference that made.. Later I started eating another one at 11 P.M. because I am up ever 2 hour to give her her meds for Dystonia. I have more energy and get more done than I did 10 years ago.. We also do real cinnamon and honey and coconut oil but that is another story. for any body on Facebook can find me as Red Meador and my better half Jeanie Esquibel is easy to find from there. drop on by and say howdy. I have pretty much quit blogging because i just have to many projects going LOL Never believe you cant teach old dogs new ticks.
Rojo, that's really encouraging to hear. I could probably use a bit more protein myself; I'lll think about looking for an acceptable source. Like I said on your blog, I like the way you see things - see you on Facebook!
Sue, it would be fun! I know I really got lucky to click so well with my current situation and its people; I wouldn't feel so simpatico with every homeowner, but it's worth putting out there.
Wow... a full cafeteria in your backyard! So much to choose from! We make smoothies too, but usually different fruits and flax seed along with almond milk (or yogurt) rather than water as we get our water from the ice cubes we use to make frozen smoothies. Early afternoon we make coffee smoothies, leftover morning coffee, cream some sugar and lots of ice! YUM! Gets that second wind going! Glad life here in T or C is treating you well!
Geri, I do that afternoon smoothie, too, only mine is a nap. :D I add the non-dairy milk to my smoothies, too, because I need the calcium boost.
I did not know that about pigweed. That's the problem with the folk names, so imprecise. No, my tame purslane was not as invasive or self sowing as the wild kind. Too bad as it was quite pretty.
Have you ever noticed that the most obnoxious, invasive, impossible plants to get rid of are some of the best for us? Especially herbal medicines... grows everywhere, God's gifts to us are not weeds! Comfrey, Mullein, dandelions etc etc etc! Now I can add purslane and lambs ear to the list!
And our punishment for ignoring them is Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and running the Toro every Saturday. :o)
I wish we had water lilies like that here. So pretty!
Good Luck Duck---we would have NO problem finding that the lump in the bed in our back bedroom is you!!! Stay as long as you would like!
Lol, Annie! You guys are very hospitable. xo
Aren't they nice? You won't be surprised to learn that they're imported!
