13.6 acres, and none of it is lawn. Is this heaven? No, it's Datil. Close enough for now. |
"7500 feet elevation calculates to 350° for ... forget it. Where's the raisin bran?" |
Don't be fooled by these fineries. This baby is completely off-grid. It's off-off-grid. It's okay. It's how I roll, when I'm not rolling.
I wasn't looking for this, but it was looking for me. It was market-weary, having been there for two years, and I was already road-weary, having been there not very long at all. It was a foreclosure, and being offered for a price that made some friends urge me to buy it on the spot. So, I offered half.
You know those outrageous ideas that don't feel outrageous, and the hard things that are completely easy, and the rough roads that smooth out ahead of you?
My agent is Marie Lee, and she made everything super-easy. I'd definitely use her again.
Assuming all goes well (and I always do), I'll close on Monday.
I won't be wintering here this year! I've got a beautiful beach in mind, I just don't know which one. Or, maybe a lovely desert. The world is my Spud-tent.

This place is adorable but definitely high elevation for winter. Beach sounds good.
Yeah, I think the snow is not ridiculous, but the temps are. Grab my flip-flops and fly!
I think this is a really good idea and glad you went for it. I have some land near Magdalena next to Riley. To be able to park and stay put for a while in your own little heaven will be nice.
Tina
I love it. Hope all works out for you.
Your new home is lovely... do I see a real "flush" toilet there? Maybe a compost one in the future? Does it have solar? All these questions... I'm sure you'll be writing all about it soon.
Congrats! Every duck needs to a nest to waddle to when they want. Quack on, sista!
Perfect! Congrats!
OMG! It's like a Hogan! Does it fast east? Who cares? When you get it you will be a Hogan Hero for finding this treasure! I LOVE IT!!!! You could even park spud in it and sleep in spud if you felt - well, "spudsick" at times! Awesome. I'm quackin out loud I'm so happy for you.
Jool in North Texas
*fast* of course should be *face*. Hogans don't move fast.
Beautiful. And what, ten times the square footage you've been living in? Nice move
Besides the gorgeous views, the solitude, the cuteness of the living space--the beauty of this is that you will have no mortgage. A mortgage is what keeps most people stuck in one place and one lifestyle. Bravo for getting it right!
Congratulations on your new house. Enjoy it in good health.
Oh, WOW, that is so cool! Love the symmetry and the ceiling! Isn't it a thrill when the Universe says "Yes, Roxanne!" and you just step aside and let it all unfold? Good work!
Does it have a level parking space nearby? Say....oh....about 24ft long? ;-)
Wow! Nice! I'm hoping to find a "home base", too.
WOW! Very nice.
Congrats! Off the Grid is cool! All that wood is cool too. And half the asking price is way cool. But how cool does it get in winter?? Do I see a perfect spot for a wood stove and a loft bed which will be up there in the hot zone?
That's awesome! Can I come visit?? Well, being "off grid", I'd somehow have to arrange to be on my own, so never mind.
It's cute, 'cept I draw the line at the wooden toilet seat. Don't get me wrong. I'm a woodworker. Love the stuff. Just not when it comes to toilet seats. If you need some warmth, burn that sucker.
congrats and a nice location in a great state... maybe we will visit on our way west next spring...
Very nice...
Looks like an excellent little piece of Roxi-heaven! Nice going!
Metamorphosis Lisa
At least you won't have to get a lawn mower! ;)
Sa-weeeet!!!!!!!!!!!!
It looks wonderful with enough space to do whatever you wish. Congratulations!
What a great spot.
Perfect! So happy that everything came together for you.
...and you paid half!!!!!!!! And it looks this great after sitting for 2 years! You hit the jackpot. Congratulations.
It will be great to have a nest to land in when you want or need it. Congrats!!!
Congrats!
OMG! I love it, it would buy it also....just a beautiful spot....lots of room for full timers to pull over also...maybe a new business...
I'm with Bob on the toilet seat. Those wood ones give me the heebie jeebies. They're just......weird. At least i know I'm not the only wood toilet seat hater out there. :)
Congrats!! Datil was one of our absolute fav places in NM. It felt like the true Wild West out there. Interesting, diverse people and beautiful scenery. Very happy fr you!
Nina
Wonderful decision. Good to have a base!
Congrats. What a fantastic looking area. But definitely too cold in the winter. Best of both worlds for you. Wonderful.
Congrats on your new digs! It is really a lovely place with such a great view! Love it.
I think it looks beautiful !!!!! Just the kind of place I would love myself. Of course you just travel in the harsh winter months. Is it dirt road? Hey, a wood stove will keep a small place like that plenty warm if you stock up on wood. Just wonderring about in and out access in the winter. I assume it snows?? I Love it. Sure would be curious how much it was? of course you dont have to disclose that info. Lucky you !!!
wow, how exciting. love that it found you and you went with it. Look forward to more pics and more quacks about it all!
How nice! I have a feeling you'll have lots of RV visitors next summer.
Lovely! Looking forward to lots more pics and info on the off-grid features. Will be fun to watch you decorate the space - memories from your travels.
Sue, I may not be able to resist disclosing. It is a dirt road, and winter access is a big question mark. I don't think they get heavy snows from a snowy-location perspective. I've read 32" in a season, but it gets warm enough during the day that the sun may melt that off. Spring thaw may also be a consideration for the road condition. I'm actually thinking about gas, because people come and split that for you.
Thanks, Nan! The view really is terrific.
Sandie, yes! Outta there at the first duckbump.
Thanks, Merikay! I think I will enjoy my time there.
Thanks, Nina! I agree - Datil grabbed my heart the first time I saw it. And that campground! I could go down there and surf all day, fill water jugs and head back up the mountain. :o)
Brenda and Bob, you're making me LOL! What's the deal with the toilet seats? Is it that you see the wood? Aren't most toilet seats made of wood and painted, or something? I'll tell you what I won't tolerate, and that's a toilet seat that has cracked. Oh no sir, not sitting there.
Anonymous, full-timers can always come visit me. I'm thinking that once they see where it is, we'll meet in town for coffee. :o)
Thanks, Kim!
Karen, I know lots of full-timers do just fine without a home base, and if I had decided on a bigger rig instead, that would have been okay. I just had to listen to that buzz in my solar plexus, you know? Hiccups? No, I'm sure it wasn't that ...
It does look pretty great, Contessa. There was a problem getting in (which is probably why it had not been bought yet), and I was prepared for the possibility that there was mold or leakage and I'd have to walk away. But, no. Yay!
Thanks, Jean! I'm feeling happy about it all.
It really is, Anne.
Thanks, Karen! I'm thinking a barn dance.
Yeah, Chris!
I hear that, Judy! High-desert landscaping for me.
Thanks, Lisa! It will be good.
Thanks, Steve.
Heyduke, come set a spell. I do love New Mexico.
Sherry, you get the loft bed when you visit. Too laddery for me! Yes, I think the previous owners were setting up for year-round living, having built a firewall and all.
Thanks, Saunter! It feels good.
Teri, will you base in Colorado?
That's exactly how it feels, Suzanne. I just got out of the way. And, I think you could "get out of the way" up on the road where it's level.
Thank you, Jan. I will!
Thank you, Sue! You're exactly right about the source of our stuckedness.
Right, Rodney? I'll just rattle around in there.
Lol, Jool. I suppose that depends on what it considers to be its face. It's on the south side of a mountain and that's where the windows point, but houses have their own sense of direction. One of the doors is on the east - does that count? P.S. North Texas is nearby in western terms.
Thanks, Nancy!
Page, I'll just plop my downy butt down and rest a while now and then. Ahhh.
Thanks, Sharon. Yes, that is one of those obsolete flush toilets - can you believe people used to use those? :D It will be replaced by a composter very soon.
Thanks, Jo. I believe it will!
Tina, I really like Magdalena. Maybe we can plan to accidentally run into each other in the cafe when you're there?
Thanks, Anne. Making it homey will be fun. I'm picturing lots of downy stuff ... [WHAT? They get down HOW???] okay, I'm picturing lots of fluffy stuff and coziness.
That would be fun, Gayle! They will probably decide to stay in the campground where there are more amenities. :O)
Thanks, Kim! Yeah, I won't be able to keep very quiet about my activities. My off-off-grid activities.
Is it a Deltec home? One of my longest-surviving dreams is to build one of those. (deltechomes.com) It's beautiful.
Love your new digs. That kinda place is right up our alley as well. Good for you in snagging that:))
Al, I haven't been looking for this, but you and Kelly finding your beautiful little house for such a good price in Arizona kindled a flame in me.
Linda, those are stunning houses! No, I don't think this is a Deltec. It's very modest, like me. :OD
OH Roxi!! This is EXCELLENT!! I'm thrilled for you!! It's absolutely "Ducky!" And what "Good Luck"" to get such a great deal! I'm in love with that area too! So nice to have a "home base" Hope w e find something like this someday!! Dixie
Tons of congratulations! I see you fell in love with the Datil area, just like I did. As you well know, our land there is MY "at peace" place. With our family issues this year, it doesn't appear that we'll get to Datil this year (which is beyond suck-y), but hopefully we'll finally be able to meet up, if we get there early enough next year...meaning before it gets too cold for you. Although you wouldn't believe how beautiful it is out there when it snows...and since it IS New Mexico, the sun comes out darn near every day. Even at 32 degrees, if the sun's out, all I need is a sweatshirt & light jacket. Woo hoo for you!
Renee
If you need anyone to come out and "house sit" let me know, looks perfect to me, even in the winter months I could handle that. Some blankets, nice solars on the roof, all sides, great battery storage, lots of wood, you would be fine!
So jealous, still looking to buy my "slice of heaven".
Congrats, It is beautiful country and you will have lots of Elk for company. I use to stop at the cafe on the corner across from the truck scales twice every day. you will love it there and actually the winters are not all that bad
It looks gorgeous! Congrats. :)
Looks perfect to me. You are one very lucky duck! I'm with the group wanting more details on the off-grid part, though.
Beautiful. Amazing. Jealous.
Holy....what a deal! What a place....lucky you!
Congratulations! Very cool house and locations:)
Looks great. I think I would love acreage, especially with no lawn:)
How exciting!!! I did that once, offered a really low ball number because my then-husband wouldn't go any higher, and they took it. I know how you feel. I'd love to find a place like that, it's really cute. Looking forward to more about it. :)
Congratulations!
Awesome! Beautiful property and home. Congrats!
Is that a YURT? I researched them because our son's best friend has 2 1/2 acres up in the pinyon forest above us. HOWEVER, county ordinances prohibit them. I LOVE IT~ And, all that land!~ WOW! You truly have a good deal! Most yurts come with a compost toilet, but yours looks like a regular one? Excellent!!!
~~Cheryl Ann~~ (soooooo envious!)
13 acres...are you going to allow any of us laggards to boondock there?
Happy for you roxie!!! Maureen
Deltecs can be modest, too...I was looking at the 300-ish square foot one :) I have wanted one for years and years and years...then became a nomad.
Maybe later.
Wow, great find, plus all the land around it too.!! Nice and high for cooler summers when we head for higher ground. Congrats.
Trainman
I'm really happy for you, but are there boondock sites?! Congratulations....
Hey, girlie, love your new digs! I wanted to thank you for spending time at my website. I hope you've found an idea or two that you can use. I'm still catching up on your blog and I love what you're doing. Rock on, sister!
I'm so excited for you! That looks like beautiful property! It's nice to have options and not too much stuff. Well done!
Lynda, there are ALWAYS boondock sites. It just depends on how level you need to be. :o)
Thanks, Trainman! Yeah, summers are pretty great. Fall is nice, too. I'll report back on spring, and I'll let winter be a mystery for now.
Linda, that's really sweet! It even has rooms. That's about the size of this cabin, too.
Thanks, Maureen!
You bet, Page! You'll have to take turns on the level spot.
Cheryl Ann, I guess it's not a yurt, because it's a permanent structure. This one has a flush toilet now, but I'll fix that.
Thanks, Bill!
Thanks, Barbara! Yeah, the low-ball is thrilling when it works.
C & A, there's the rub with acreage. I looked carefully for absence of lawn before I leaped.
Thanks, Pam!
P & B, I feel lucky, too. And, I'll talk about .... later!
Thanks, Bill and Ann. No need to feel jealous, though - there are good deals enough for everyone!
Linda, it's off-off-grid right now, because the components aren't there yet (except the well). But, as I get them in, I will for-sure be talking about them.
Thanks, Becky!
Jeanie, I'd like to talk to you more about "not that bad." Although I know if the sun shines it can't be as bad as the Northeast. I'm looking forward to elken magic.
Karyn, that's a possibility!
Renee, it feels wonderful there, and I hope you can get back speedily. We'll meet up, definitely.
Thanks so much, Dixie. You've been so sweet, checking in on me and worrying about me. I hope we can meet up this winter.
Lynda, yes, such as they are. Do you need level? Thanks!
Chelle, thanks for taking the time and energy to create and share a helpful website!
Tessa, yes, it's good not to have too much stuff! Besides tall cowboy boots and a snake stick. :D
Hoy! How did I miss this post?
13.6 acres to ramble around on? Lucky you! 7600' elevation? Cool in the summer, nice!
We, too, needed a place to rest on our laurels, so I understand. (but we chose 3100' in NorCal).
Wow, I'm excited for you.
You could even go in the snake-skin-selling bidness. :)
Nickie, I've been looking for a low-stakes, easy bidness. :o)
