I'm writing you from Tucson.
Annie and David, friends to the world, took me in without a question even though they were expecting bona fide guests at the same time, and wouldn't even be home when I arrived in Truth or Consequences. I was fabulously and graciously entertained and fed for three nights, along with guests Donna and Gary.
Finally, the weather broke in TorC, and I kept going south.
Gary and Donna talked about some sights they sighted on the way, and so I reverse-traced their wheelprints. First stop, Safford Arizona, and Essence of Tranquility.
If you are in a position to camp, this option offers outstanding value at $15/night/person. They cannot accept RVs, so Spud came in incognito, disguised as a hatchback.
When you camp, you also get community room and kitchen privileges, electricity, wifi, coffee, and nearly-unlimited hot springs access. The community room has a TV and a propane fireplace, so I relaxed in there by the fire until I couldn't delay bedtime any longer.
That night was 24°F, my new high of lows. I learned later, unofficially, that for another $5 they will run an extension cord to your vehicle or tent. I would have splurged. The next night was a Casita #16 splurge.
While I was there, I met Mosey, a toddler still measuring age in months. She had a lot to say. I think this name may be the single-best thing her parents did for her future.
When you get to the hot springs, you're going to see a lot of "Don't" signs. "Don't" let that discourage you. Clarisse is very sweet - she even gave me a hug when I left - and unless you're a jerk, you're not going to get yelled at.
Have you seen The Thing?
Yep, seeing The Thing.
Before you get to The Thing, you're already seeing Some Things.
Thing 1 and Thing 2, may they rest in peace. |
Saguaros!!! |
After I left Truth or Consequences, I was doing all-new stuff. It's good to be on the road. Tonight I'm in Tucson where it is not 24°.

Glad to read a post from you, always a chuckle or is that a quack? :) Stay warm
Thanks! I'm on it!
I often wonder how those old time attractions hang on? They were a bit corny when I was a kid and that was a very long time ago:(
We blew right past there a few months ago and wondered what "The Thing" was. Now I know. Keep up the quacks. small smilie face
The Thing - worth $1.00? Are those mummies? Weird! Yeah, sleeping in Spud at 24 degrees is pushing the comfort level, for sure - that's a 3-dog night and you have no dogs. It's over, I think, and starting to warm up. :)
I'm so happy to see all my road buddies headed south. don't mind me freezing in the north all by myself.
Always enjoy the telling of your wanderings, Roxi...brother and fam moving to Alb so soon as I get something cool to eat and sleep in I'm headed that way to see what NM is all about. And eat lots of pie. :-)
Oh The Thing been there many years ago! ahaha Hope you stayed warm last night. Glad you made it today should be around 76. I'll IM you.
How lucky for you that the cabin comes with the Betty warning system! What a fun adventure the storm set you on - maybe not the night in Spud.... Yes, Mosey is a fabulous name, she's got a great start :-) Can't believe the Thing is still there, although there is a certain rite of passage for parents to force their adolescents to see it (and then be rewarded with miles of "that was so lame") Glad you're in the warm - enjoy!
Love the Stafford area and those hot springs! That's on our itinerary, when/if we leave Anza Borrego. Stay warm and happy travels in 2015!
Enjoy, Lynda! I was glad to find it.
Jodee, I love it!! "the Betty warning system"! I didn't even pay extra for that feature! And, I guess the rite of passage is for the parents.
Jo, I guess The Thing isn't going anywhere fast. I'm gonna leave Tucson faster than that (tomorrow morning) to meet a friend who is holding off on further adventures waiting for me.
Rhodalyn, I think you'll like the pie-fillin' outta New Mexico. I do.
Aw, Cyndi, leave that cold place? No?
Barbara, I'd say it's worth $1 to say you've seen The Thing. Plus the other oddities on the Thing Trail. Sleeping in Tucson was pretty great last night.
Evie, I'm glad to save you and Joy the $2. Plus, as an extra bonus: LARGE smilie face.
Anneke, I think it's just so VERY Americana that it can't die.
Thanks for sharing "the Thing" with us. When we drove through there last year, we didn't stop but were quite curious. LOVE the Little Free Libraries. We have used them in at least 5 cities so far, one of which was in a Tucson neighborhood kinda close to the U of A. Stay warm now!
Well, I drove right past The Thing; and glad from your pix that I didn't stop. I was in Tucson just a few days ago and visited SNP. Now at the RTR in Q. Are you coming? BTW, Frank said to tell you hi. Take care and enjoy the warm temps.
I love the cool stuff you find!!
Gail, I'm just always tripping over that stuff.
Hi David! I don't know about RTR - how are the crowds? Tell Frank "hi" for me if you see him again before I do.
I wonder if they just said "It's a mummy - come see it" it would get more visitors?
Emily, this was my first LFL sighting - I approve.
I see Bill Bryson's Walk in the Woods in that library box. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend it and I'm confident you'll really like it!
You know, Bill, I considered snarfing that book up, but it would have just been me collecting, since I've read it before. I did enjoy it - you're right.
Thank you for visiting The Thing so we don't have to. Thank you.
