Sightseeing, if you happen to like that sort of thing.

“Don’t write because you want to say something, write because you have something to say.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

"Mr. Fitzgerald -- I believe that is how he spells his name -- seems to believe that plagiarism begins at home." - Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald

I went out alone to see some sights, and some sites. Here's some stuff:

Falling Creek Church, Lake City, Florida

In the pulpit - how cheeky!

Photobucket
"Studies" have shown that criminal mischief declines when a cardboard cut-out of a policeman is visible.  This church is open to visitors without a guide, and the urge to be naughty must arise from time to time.    The eyes on this thing follow you around the room, whispering Thou Shalt Not ... carve your initials into the wall ... throw your beer bottle through a window ... drop a poop on the pew ... Another historic building just a few yards down the road was arsonized, and I don't blame this congregation for being nervous when they have to leave their doors unlocked.
Photobucket
I've heard that about manufactured housing.

Photobucket
See the fire line?
I was out here looking for a benchmark.  Do you see it?  Me, neither.  This is as close as I got:

Photobucket

There should be a brass benchmark within 8" of this carsonite witness post (before that, they were made of paarite or cavettite), but 38 years ago it was 6" below ground.   I didn't bring a shovel, and I was just outside someone's yard.

Photobucket
Who's it gonna be?  Whooo's it gonna beeee?

Photobucket
While you delay, it decays.

I need to get here at night.

Nice sightings of sites. I like the first church best, and that mural is awesome.

Oh, wow. I thought you were just kidding about the compulsion to get thyself to a church.

Thanks! Yes, the first church is the better one, but it does not have a NEON SIGN! And, apparently, this newer church was first, if we're to believe neon.

Haha! If you close your eyes and walk in Lake City, you will be at a church before you have fallen or run into a tree.

The glowing Jesus head is creepy!

Right? I wonder if they got it in some kind of holy Spencer's Gifts.

Beautiful wooden church. Doesn't look like you can boondock next to it though.

When we were at the campground in Louisbourg, NS they had one of those Jesus face's that followed your every move. Hope it works for them, it would be a shame to see this church burned down.

In fact, Kevin and Ruth, it would be a perfect spot for boondocking right in its level, circle driveway under a live oak. They do meet there on Sundays, though, and a giant rig might cramp their style, not to mention their hospitality.

Very nice sights you are sharing with us of this site. Beautiful little Church. I must have missed that when we were there.

Hmmmm. I didn't know Geodetic Survey was in NOAA - Natl Oceanic & Atmospheric Admin. Thought they were part of USGS in Interior. I worked next door to them for 30 years and never knew. Thought they only did coastal and ocean mapping and surveys. Found this that explains it: http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=24568 I even had a place at a mapping task table for a while in the 90's and didn't know they did the whole country. Seems pathetic now ....

Pidge, it's easy to miss, but you were about 100 yards from it, across the bridge.

Tesaje, I'll have to study up on that. I had a vague notion it was part of USGS, but am not clear enough on the divisions to know the difference. What sort of work did you do, if you can tell me without then killing me.

I used to work for the weather service. Nuttin secret there.
USGS is part of the Dept of the Interior. NOAA is part of the Dept of Commerce.

The wooden church really is beautiful! Not sure I'd leave it open folks being who they are. I might lock my doors if a church down the way had been arsonized. But a glowing Jesus head as an answer seems iffy.

Love the Fitzgerald quote. Zelda always did say Scott stole her material.
