| We walked a long way specifically to get here, but I got the willies. High tension power lines snapping over our heads, and this thing in our sights. I fought the urge to run. RUN! ME! Such was the extent of my discomfort. |

It's an Ironwood tree. Don't try to cut or saw it. The name is for real.

Stupid fence. That's all I have to say about that. The salad makes up for it though. :)
I had a real, gut reaction to that place. When the gut reacts, it can't be pretty.
Ironwood! Thank you. We're not at the Slabs, but when you mentioned it, I Googled - only an hour thirty from here.

Ugh! not so great memories of the dunes and plank road - we got stuck in the sand with our truck and trailer there back in 2008 - the border patrol lady tried to help us dig out but alas we had to call for a tow truck and pay the $130 to get out! lesson learned! don't drive on the sand!
Yuck. Sorry to hear you had that nasty experience. We'll try to learn from you, and not have to pee on the electric fence ourselves.

As for the Slabs have you ever read the book or watched the movie "Into the Wild?" There's a small excerpt where McCandless visited on his travels to Alaska.
I have a silly question. Which side of the fence was the sign? Were they trying to keep people out (in which case shouldn't it have been in Spanish?) or stop you leaving?

I like that photo of the piece of glass catching just a little bit of light. That's a nice photo. And that lunch salad looked amazing.
I see the all-American pasttime is active there, too... shooting up the signs along the road. That sport is right up there with graffiti.... Interesting that plank road pieces have been laying there since 1927 and not totally decayed. Guess that's desert life for you.

Cheryl, that would be so Star Trek (the original). Seriously, it had that kind of mojo, though. I haven't seen that movie. I've also been told to watch a movie called "something something something Grid something." Think I could Google that? It's all about people truly living off the grid, possibly all about the Slabs.
AJ, good to hear from you! It's not a silly question at all; I pondered the same thing. It was on the US side. I thought maybe if Border Patrol happened upon someone fat and pink with a camera hanging off her neck on the US side, they would make the assumption that I was where I'm supposed to be. But, maybe it's not always such an easy call.

Sharon, it's universal. Or, at least, national. Those signs are sitting ducks - QUACK! I wonder if someone is still maintaining that display. Otherwise, wouldn't it have been covered over by now?

I used to live just off of Plank Road. The one from the 1700's that they used to go over the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. It's not in the desert. It's paved now. Too bad...so now I like yours better.

Be careful, cause that's a sidewinder ironwood tree. And I like those giant sequoia groves, they remind me of my brother's HO train set when we were kids.
Have to admit, when I saw the sign Plank Road, I did not think of slats of wood. Now that Planking and Owling have run their course, there is a new pose called Tebowing - or so my son informed this weekend. I know, off topic but still....

Donna, I've heard of Tebowing, but haven't done it (that anyone has seen). The salad was both beautiful and delicious. Most of us eat "vegan food" all the time, some just add animal products to the mix.

If we ever cross paths on the highway, I am inviting myself to lunch and Annie is in charge! If Wayne doesn't like it he can fend for himself! I made black bean soup yesterday, but it doesn't look as good as that salad.
