Reading Cherry's tutorial on template tweaking, I realized that my feed settings need to be on "full" to enable threaded replies. We'll see how that worked.
Which raised another question: how do you like to get your feeds?
I switched my setting to "short" a while back, for a couple of reasons. But, Camille makes a great point about full feeds. Reading blogs at work! How could I have become so quickly out-of-touch with work life?!? Not everyone has the luxury of filling their computer histories with RV travel blogs. Although, it looks better than ShirkingForDummies.biz. And other possibilities, not that I've ever been to those sites.
If you get this blog by feed (email or reader), please come over and state your preference. Do you just like to be reminded by email or reader, or do you read the whole thing there? Or, do you read the whole thing? [eyebrow raised] Bloggers, how do you feed, and why?
When we go to a new place, I like to explore by volunteering for Find-a-Grave. I just change the zip code in my settings. The Pioneer Cemetery inside the Park reminded me.
We geocache. It's fun to see what might be hidden within walking distance of our campsite. Often, lately, I don't use a GPS; I study the landscape by Google Maps and then use my geosense.
I'm especially fond of benchmarks, of which the South Rim has several.
Several days ago I messed up my jaw in a situation involving an avocado pit (don't ask - I'd tell you, and then we'd both be embarrassed). Can you suggest some self-help?

Not suppose to chew on the pits. Might as well bite into a bench mark. Of which we have many on the North Rim as well.
I follow you on my Google Reader. And I do read the whole thing. Right here. Honest.
Hurray! On all counts. Except for the pits.
Oh, and now I see my threaded comments didn't take.
I did notice that you went to short format. I keep up on your site using the Google Reader at work during the day. I don't get too many chances to read RSS feeds there.
On my way into work, on the train, I read my RSS feeds on my iPad using Mr. Reader. Sometimes I don't read the RV RSS feeds (yes, I have them all categorized. How sick am I?) If the summary for that days blog looks interesting enough I'll star it to read when I get to my work or home computer so that I can see your pictures.
If I only read the RSS summary on Google or Mr. Reader I don't think you get the ad revenue since no ads appear in that format.
Guess I'm not sure what I'm doing. Your post shows up as a paragraph on my bloglist and then I click on that to read the whole post. Maybe that's google reader. What do I know? Except that pits and mouths don't go together.
Thanks, Mobileer; that's a very helpful summary. So, are you saying that a full format on your reader is most helpful/convenient? I'm pretty sure I have PPC ads disabled everywhere, so that's not an issue for me. Unless you're seeing AdSense somewhere? If you notice that you're seeing them somewhere for me, I'd like to know, because I hate AdSense.
Sandie, I'm not sure what that is, either. I think Google bloglist only shows a paragraph for everyone, although I won't wager with money on it.
But, there was still avocado on it!
Email reminders are a good thing, but I go to the site to read.
Thanks, Harriet. That's good to know. Oh, and Annie made Pulp Loaf this morning - it's good!
I read all blogs in Blogger from either the dashboard or links ocn other blogs.
I do, too, Merikay. So short or full makes no difference to us - cool.
I read on Google Reader. I have to click past the jump to read the whole thing, but I never fail to do that. For you, the world. Watch out of pits of any kind. Some involve a very long step down.
Thanks for the camera and template links. You are on my bloglist on my blog so I just go click it and up you come in my browser. Easy peasy.
Good Grief! A TECHNICAL question! Can I ask Rick before I answer? I only know that I go to my own blog and there's a column that tells me what blogs I subscribe to... if you're there (and I always hope you are) then I click on that to read it. Eventually you'll show up... It gives me the title of your blog.... If I'm lucky and our internet is working okay, I can click on it and read it. Does this make sense? What the heck do I know?
I have no idea what you are talking about. I click on your post on my Google dashboard.
You should eat more cherries so you wouldn't find yourself in the pits ( like Erma Bombeck) :)
Oh yes, How to I feed? By mouth. And why? Because I'm hungry...
Hi...I am such a newby at blogs and such that I haven't been able to find a name for myself when I respond to you. I subscribe through email because I like to have a good "Good Luck Day" instead of all the spam I get in my in box.
I read your stuff on my Google Dashboard like most others. And I do read the whole thing :p
I use a full feed for my Blogger Blog and Feedburner for my Wordpress Blogs. On Blogger, I think to get threaded comments, you have to go to Settings --> Posts and Comments --> and set your Comment Location to "Embedded."
Thanks, Maria! And, I read you when you come up on my Duckroll. It seems that my chosen theme doesn't support threaded comments, for some reason, because I changed back to "full" feed and "embedded" comments, and still...nothing.
Anonymous, your name is very mysterious, and ominous in a 4Chan-y way. So, when you get the blog in email, do you like to read it there, or do you like to come over to the blog?
Ha, Judy! Okay, I have everything I need to know now.
Sharon, I peeked at your blog to see what you mean. I do the same thing. So, feeds aren't important to the way you read blogs. Yay!
You're welcome, Sherry! That's how I read, too.
Aw, thanks Jan! This pit had a nasty first step, too, even though it was right there in my hand.
Hi, I'm going to try that powdered pb. Found a source in Santa Cruz
Cool. I hope you like it - I really do.
I read from the blogger dashboard. There are other ways to read blogs??? Who knew! Most of what you were saying is like a foreign language to me. Feeds, threaded comments, may as well be speaking in tongues!
Not reading you blog in full would be just plain....lazy. Not to mention self-defeating. I enjoy reading the Duck. :)
Try icing your jaw for now. And some gentle massage would be good. Just sort of drag your knuckles across the tissue around the jaw. Don't dig in deep. Geeeennntle........
Brenda, your options are limitless (>1). Sorry - I didn't mean to get all weird and glossolalic. But, if you like to get blogs in email, that's a kind of feed. Some people gather them in Google Reader, or other similar services. Anywhere you read a blog that isn't the blog - it's a feed. Like RVThereYet is a feed.
I'm glad it's not a chore! That would mean I'm doing a very bad job. And, thanks for that idea. Maybe I'll use that bag of peas I've been eyeing in the freezer, then I'll have to eat them! Geeeeennnnntle...
I usually come visit when you link to FB. I don't do "feeds" so much - not sure exactly why.
I'm assuming you didn't tag me for orthodontic advice...
;-)
I really liked being able to read your posts on LiveJournal. I'd be much more likely to comment on them there, too, because (1) I don't have to log in there as I do here in a way that is labor-intensive and not always successful, (2) one huge advantage of LiveJournal as blogging software is threaded comments, and (3) I'm much more likely to keep up my half of a comment conversation there since I get e-mail notices when you reply.
OT, but I've been flirting with the idea of abandoning Facebook altogether; lately it's been a clearinghouse of craziness and bigotry.
I use Google Reader. The blogs I "follow " all show up under a sub -heading "blogs I follow "... how strange. Others I just subscribe to the RSS feed, which is very simple to do. Those appear under a sub -heading "other blogs ". I like to read blogs on my Kindle Fire early in the morning. I have my reader set to show updated posts, since I follow a lot of different blogs, enjoy the diversity. Some I just read and view the photos in Reader. Yours, and a few others, I always open the full blog so I can see comments and everything. Sometimes I even subscribe to the comments as it makes it easier to see new comments and replies. Since I'm on a cable modem at home, I have no constraints (no comment, you!!) When we 're on the road I still use Reader on my baby laptop using whatever WIFI we can find. Then photos load slower, but if you've resized them (thank you very much) it's usually not too bad. Now, about that pit...
I use Google Reader (ditto Russ's first few sentences above). I follow quite a few blogs and, on my favorites such as yours, I click through to the blog itself so I can see the comments. Don't have great advice for the jaw except tylenol if it's painful and maybe some ice if it's swollen.
I try but I can't constrain him!! See, I read the whole blog (from my blogroll) and the comments too.
About that avacado...I had a strained jaw once from an overzealous dentist. Heat and ice and muscle relaxants, but mostly time, took care of the problem. Not fun though. Sometimes life is just the pits.
Lately I've been linking through facebook to the blog, or I read it through the Dashboard. I don't have any idea what any of these other terms mean. I tried to read blogs on the Kindle Fire, but have a hard time. It seems to freeze up all the time, and I don't think I can comment. The slow internet here at Mesa Verde probably has something to do with that. I do read the entire blog and usually most of the comments - depending on the speed of the internet on any given day. Sorry you hurt your jaw, the advice given so far should help.
Just wondering what do you think the advantage is of replying to comments here in the comment section rather than through email.. Do you still get an email of all the comments and then an email of your replies. It seems like extra work to have to go back and look at the blogs for a reply. Just wondering - I don't have my blog set up this way.
I am always being asked about RSS feeds and I have no clue what they are, even though I know I've signed up for some.
I go to my blogger dashboard fairly frequently and read all of the blogs that I follow, including yours. Oh, excuse me, especially yours.
If I don't go to my dashboard for a while, I read your blog, anyway, because of your nifty links on FaceBook.
I wouldn't want to ever miss seeing your blog, so I hope you don't really take a FaceBook vacation. Or that, if you do, it's a quickie.
xoxo
Sue
Full format is most effective in both Google Reader and Mr. Reader. Ads only show when I go to your actual website. They're on the right column of the site.
Thanks, Sue! It's sweet of you to say I'd be missed. Even if I do take a break, I'll still post new posts there. I don't do a lot of feedy stuff, just because I'm not accustomed to it, and so I forget. If I get a feed by email, it takes care of reminding me.
Teri, I'm not sure I'm reading your question correctly, so tell me if I'm not. You mean, why do I respond here instead of directly to the person? For one thing, I like the interaction here in the comments. I want to keep the party in one place, unless someone asks me something pointed that they want to know, and that I want to be sure they get the response to.
The other problem is that often, if I respond by email, the address is "no-reply@Blogger.com" which isn't going anywhere. I agree that it's a pain in the jaw to have to remember to come back here for an answer, and I don't know how to fix that.
And, I want to keep Russ coming back to read the comments. :D
Donna, the constraints are not working. Once you let him go all Calendar Guy on your blog, the damage was done.
Rob, you should be able to do that again now. The part I can't promise is that I'll remember to go to Live Journal to read your comments, because I'm just not there much anymore, and I'm not aware of any way for LJ to notify me of comments on a feed (unlike with a direct post).
So with you on the crapola on Facebook. It's like the medium distills the stupid so it's the hard stuff, not just sparkling stupid juice.
So, Russ and LD2, it would be easier for you to read the whole post on your readers, maybe? But, would you still click through to comment? Or, would you leave those nuggets of information unconveyed?
Maggie, I tagged you for Jazz Hands Angel, but if you have orthodontic advice, out with it. Good to know about the non-feeds you use.
Google Reader, will read text summary first. If it sounds like photos/comments may be interesting, I will then display entire blog.
Thanks, Dave. That puts a lot of pressure on the first paragraph, doesn't it? I'm not sure I can bear up under that kind of stress.
Just a quick note, you may know already; Under PICK ME ! PICK ME! there is no Icon showing below for Amazon, Now, when you put the cursor over that area, the hand is showing and when you click on it it does bring you to Amazon. It like a mystery click to somewhere. Just saying...
I use Google Reader but it's going away in a year or so. :-(
I love avocados, and have taken to eating them on crackers mashed with a little salt and pepper this summer. An avocado pit is a huge thing to put in your mouth - be careful girl!
I went ballroom dancing last night in Eugene (just one guy danced with me though) and saw a wonderful lesbian couple (excellent dancers) dancing together. It was incredible to me that everyone was accepting and they both danced freely with everyone (one woman consistently danced the "lead"). I guess there's hope for the world - at least in Eugene, OR.
Okay, well now I'm confused. Is there some oblique angel reference (or hands reference) I am missing here?
WOW look at the comments to this "technical question". You even have me back again because your subject says OUR CAMERAS but there is only one camera listed. Is this a grammatical error or an oversite or is it our camera or my cameras and you have two. chew on that one. Don't mean to put you in the pits!
Just wanted to say since you gals are close to the N.Rim you are just next to Kanab, UT which has the bestest animal rescue in the county -> Best Friends. It's a magical place and you can even volunteer "on the go" (we signed up for a week). The drive around the rescue and over to see the cemetary is amazing.
Nina
When I see you have a new post in my blogroll (or Al's) I click on it and read it.
My physical therapist told me the best cure for sore muscles after a long hike or run is to go out and hike or run some more the next day.
So...using that logic, I would say to cure the jaw pain, talk as much as you can amd exercise those muslces. :)
Man! An avocado pit! Wish I had something good to recommend for recovery but it sounds like resting it is not a good idea which I thought might have been! Take care. Quack! Quack!
Quack Quack. I know this doesnt have to do with this particular post but I just watched the video you posted of Dr. Greger's nutritional talk . Good stuff and he is funny too !!
Harriet, thanks for telling me. Is it because you are using AdBlock, maybe? And, sometimes, things just vanish from my page. I'm becoming philosophical about it. Thanks for clicking! :D
Google Reader is leaving?? Wow. I didn't realize.
Annie and I used to swing dance, East Coast and West. We haven't in years, except in our living room. I have been told many times that I would like Eugene, and that sounds about right. Annie leads in our pair. We found that leaders are scarce, and so she danced all she wanted.
Maggie, it's the link to "volunteer for Find-a-Grave."
Ha, Sherry! Annie and I each have this camera. I chew on nothing lately.
Nina, I just turned to ask Annie if she could volunteer at a no-kill shelter without bringing someone home. The pressure to adopt is great at a conventional shelter (which is how we got most of our cats). She is undecided.
Oh boy, Chinle. Is endless avocado my cure?
Thanks, Levonne. I'll try Chinle's idea of hiking my jaw next. Thanks!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Sue. We thought he was funny, too.
Mobileer, that's good to know. I've switched to full format for feeds, alliteratively speaking. If you need to buy something, you can always click through. :D
Oops. That will teach me not to click.
Hey, I don't think it counts if it's done digitally!!!
