I'll close up this chapter by telling you where you should eat while in Kanab.
- Angel Village, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. We ate here almost every day (they're closed Sunday). Nicolas is the chef and manager of the café, and hospitality is his strength. All items on the buffet are vegetarian, and if you prefer a vegan option, grab a plate and head to the kitchen for an animal-free delight. Enjoy all-you-can-eat salad, entree, dessert, tea and/or coffee - $5.

- Laid Back Larry's Vegetarian Eatery and Market. Val makes some tasty vegan food, mostly grilled sandwiches. We ate here several times. My favorite was the tempeh reuben. You can also get a smoothie, or just stop in for a cup of coffee. Everything on the menu is vegan, so relax. If you're an omnivore, I suspect you won't miss meat this time around. Check out the small-but-densely-packed vegetarian market in back.
I can't recommend Spurs; they do boast "VEGAN" on their sign, but there are three lackluster items on that menu. Service is the pits. I can't imagine your service will be much better even if you order a steak.
We ate at Houston's Trail's End, where the service was very good and the veggie burgers (and fries) tasted great. They have plenty of meaty choices, too.
It's not dining, but I do recommend a couple of local thrift stores. Kanab's Hospital Auxiliary thrift store is pretty good, and we really liked Fredonia's ARC thrift shop right on 89. Their proceeds go right to local animal rescues who aren't as well-endowed as Best Friends.
We're enjoying wonderful temps in Flagstaff, and thinking ahead to fall and winter. Can you suggest boondocking areas we might want to try as weather gets cooler?

I've now got Kanab, UT on my list of places to visit-- gorgeous scenery enough is a reason to go, but add some cute critters and multiple vegan restaurants? Grand Slam!
Have you guys been over to explore Canyon de Chelly yet? Now might be a good time of year to check it out (and Monument Valley too!). If you get adventurous and have the gas budget, there are some good boondocking areas around Moab, UT and gorgeous Arches and Canyonlands NPs.
I wanted to see Canyon de Chelly last year when I was out there, but by wintertime it gets far too cold there. The campground in the NP is supposedly free (unless the Navajo are now able to charge for it).
OK so why didn't you do this post before we had already been to Kanab twice? Very uncharitable of you. But of course we cook in nearly all the time so I'm not sure what I'm whining about. No ideas for winter in Flagstaff. Come on back to Florida so we can meet and greet cha.

Sherry, that kind of scrooginess is just the way we roll. We're thinking of Apache Junction, and then we run out of ideas. Q: done that. Ajo, done it, but glad to do it again. California: why not? I'd like to hear from you vets what's doing so we can get to doing it.

A reproduction sequence? I've never heard of such a thing, and I'm so sorry ducks are reproducing right there while you're watching! I'm relatively powerless over the inner workings of this blog - that's Blogger territory - but I'll google around and see what I come up with. What does it do, exactly? A lot of windows open on their own, or something like that?
I looked up a recipe for a Thempeh Reuben and found several. Looks easy
Ruebena are one of my favorite grilled sandwiches and I will definitely try making one with tempeh soon.
Tonight I grilled a big basket of veggies and had a yummy sausageless sausage with it.

note to Lynn on Canyon de Chelly campground, no longer free but greatly improved since the Navajo Nation took it over! Still dry docking but beautiful level paved campsites. Several pull thru's but most are back in's. Big clean restrooms and lots of shade. On our blog now. As for winter camping/boondocking... anyplace south of Tucson! Benson area has boondocking everywhere!
Happy, great suggestion! We want to see Bisbee, and Tombstone is on the way. And, Annie discovered a donkey rescue in Benson. That sounds like an excellent possibility.

Merikay, I never cared for sauerkraut until I had a tempeh reuben. Annie makes a killer reuben, too, and I had forgotten about it until LBL.
Oh that's right, you guys haven't been down to Bisbee yet. Well, with all your new expertise in large animal care, I wonder if you could ranch-sit at the place where Al and Kelly have stayed the last few years? It's right next to an awesome wildlife sanctuary (Whitewater Draw) that gets thousands of sandhill cranes every winter. A gorgeous, low-key valley w/mountains in the distance all around thats only about 10-20 miles NE of Bisbee.

Somer, it's like we've eaten together! Larry's is perfect when you have a hankering. You know what I mean. A nice, toasty, grilled something that's not an animal.
Bisbee is a must see Duck's I have heard of that rescue but never have seen it. Shame on me. I have also heard of the ranch but never have been there either.(shame again). But check first I heard the lady was really old and not in very good health. That was about 3 years ago. Maybe some one took it over. You park for free but work the ranch. Have fun and if you Ducks get to my area of Tucson or where ever maybe we can meet.
Jojo, the ranch where Al and Kelly stayed was Belle Star's place? I'm working without a research net. I did hear that Belle's place no longer welcomes overnighters, and her blog seemed to corroborate. Marianne took that place out of her guides for that reason.

Well obviously you should come to the SW because that's where we will be...and well what other reason do you need? Seriously though..Tuscon, Bisbee are both on our radar this year. Haven't researched the boondocking yet, but I hear there is plenty out there. Take your time getting there tho' coz it's still very, very hot.

Bisbee is nice town, but I don't know where you could boondock in that area. Somebody will for sure. Watch out for the deep open pit mines!

Nina, it would be very cool if our paths crossed this winter! We met a fellow this week who lives in Tucson, and made it sound very appealing (aside from a full-time job he suggested I apply for). And Bisbee has always sounded neat.
Nyuk nyuk nyuk, Nickie. I do like Ajo, and that strange RV park in Why. Why? Who's on first? I haven't found boondocking around Bisbee now that Belle's ranch is off the list, but I haven't given up yet.
