Getting into the weapon garden was pretty easy. We parked on the outside, got our pass, and walked in.

Reception is still lousy. |

Staring right down the Poconos of a jet thing. |
 |
I guess drinking water is important. |
 |
NOW we're talking! |
 |
L to R: Cheryl, yucca |
The actual white sands are 30 miles up US 70.
 |
How much further to the ocean, Mom? |
 |
These lumps look like cyanobacteria to me. |
 |
Nailed it. |

Under the boardwalk - out of the sun - under the boardwalk - you'll be toasting your bun - under the boardwalk - people walking above - under the boardwalk - you'll ... SNAKE!!! |
We kept on going to Alamogordo, because once you're this far, you're a fool to turn back without seeing it. There was a snack to be had at Brown Bag Deli. I don't want to say Cheryl's omnivorous toasted sub looked delicious. I don't want to say it. My vegan sub was also tasty, special-ordered.

I love your technical terms. 'Jet thing'. 'Weapon garden'. Or is that what they call it?
Great post. Sounds like you are doing okay but that seems like a hot area to be car camping in. Did you at least get the duck to retain your luck?
Gosh, that sand looks WHITE! (nice pics)
Gee, and you didn't even get abducted by any aliens... ;-)
I like to keep things precise, Kate. They call it something like Death Park.
Colleen, this was just a day trip in Spud. I'm still at Cheryl's, camping in feather-bed lux ... UNCLE MOE???
Nickie, they don't kid around when they name these places!
Cheryl, THEY WERE COMING FOR ME. You didn't give them enough time.
And somehow, despite your precision, I always know _exactly_ what you're talking about.
It's, you know, *flappy hands*
Hee!
I really enjoyed seeing the pics of the 'white sands'. It's an amazing place - we were there in 2008 and couldn't believe how white those sands were - they looked like snowdrifts!
Sunglasses are mandatory out there! People were sledding, too.
I'd be a little worried about the artillery. Love those white dunes.
We really want to get there the next time we're in New Mexico. It's such pretty sand! Very different from what we have here.
Is the word "interdunal" really necessary?
Poconos???? Only you would have thought up that word for a description. It's most definitely 'on the nose.'
And me sitting here not even knowing NM had white sands much less interdunal areas on the sands and with cyanobacterial bumpy areas. Apparently I need to go on more vacations. Just sayin'
Oh yes, and I have decided that you need to write a book. :)
Please try to get to Cloudcroft while in the general area. You may never want to leave.
You do have a way with words. I had a wonderful laugh this morning. We loved those white sands but we didn't get any of those technical words learned.
Nice! I haven't been to White Sands (yet!), but I understand they have a pretty cool evening event there during the full moon. Glad to see you and Cheryl got out to have some fun.
Some years ago, the military (I think it was the military) imported some African oryx to eat the invasive grasses and flora that was destroying the area around the White Sands. As it usually happens, though, they critters enjoyed the area too much, proliferated and now there are hunting seasons for oryx in NM.
Emjay
Emjay, a few cane toads may be just the thing here.
Sue, Cheryl mentioned a full-moon hike. She may have said more about it, but I can't remember anything after "hike."
Thanks, Sandie. Just ask if you need anything else explained.
Dragonfly, I've heard this before! I keep waffling in my decision on which place to be altitude-sick first.
Nancy, Cyano-Bergerac and Roxanne say "get on out there."
Jan, most people just don't say "Poconos" enough.
You tell me, Rodney. You tell me.
Oh, Molly, you guys are out of NM? I can't keep up!
Gaelyn, I took a Dr. Strangelove approach to the ordnance.
Chuck and I need to make a visit to White Sands before we leave NM! The next time you are near Alamgordo, you might want to head a bit more north to Three Rivers... great little boondocking campground and acres and acres of boulders covered with petroglyphs!
Thanks for the rec, Geri! I'll check that out
Oh, Yuck ca - in bloom, no less! Good one on the cyanobacteria ID. But weren't you a pro in that field in a former life?
Weapon Garden - indeed.
You have an eye for taking stunning photos. The compositions are great.
Another place to add to the list. Waiting for my truck to arrive of course if the wind doesn't stop I won't be tenting. Oh yea I got a truck last week.
Keep the pictures coming and my list will keep growing.
Looks like your having a grand time.
Mary, yeah, supposedly. That's what I told employers.
Thanks, Susan! That's a great compliment.
You got a truck? Do you still have the Vibe? Are you going camping in it?
Great photos! You captured the blue skies I'm missing since we're now in Oklahoma. "The sky is so blue today" -- you mean that pale, almost-white-with-just-a-hint-of-color overhead...THAT's blue???" I so miss the mountains when we're in the Midwest. You should check out Ruidoso & Cloudcroft while you're in the vicinity. Thanks for the NM fix -- I'll take it when- and how-ever I can get it.
Renee
It's what I remember from Florida, too, Renee. When I first saw a western sky it knocked me over.
You are right, that's WHITE. Great photos. I'm off into the wilderness near Jackpot NV hoping to find some fine rocks - may stay out there awhile.
The Vitara had some electrical problems so bye bye. got a Dodge Dakato. I got the idea of the tent from you. It came today. Yes going camping. YAHOO!
Enjoy, Swankie! One (you) can never have too many rocks.
Cool, Jo! Pictures!
Okay, White Sands is on our bucket list now! Thanks for all the pics!!
Cool. Wanted to go there the one time I was in NM. Next time.
