Truth or Consequences and Magdalena, New Mexico. You can get higher, but you can't get cooler.

Elephant Butte Lake was nice, for a night, and then it was time to climb.

Spud at Elephant Butte Lake State Park

I drove past and had to turn around. SO MUCH TIE-DYE.

It's Jeff, tie-dye guy extraordinaire. I don't know how he knew, but he told me things I wondered without me asking. In case you're wondering: 42  He has some great and very cool stuff that he dyes himself.

Seems about right.
My spirits started to brighten once I hit Socorro and headed west.

Magdalena spoke to me. It said Set a spell!

There's a lot of history here, but I don't know any of it. I know this town has je ne sais quoi, I just don't know what it is.

The library is the cutest library ever (until the next town). You can get wifi there 24/7, you just have to stop in during business hours and get the sign-in and password. It's across the street from this building on North Main Street. I forgot to take its picture because of my rapturous admiration, and I had to pee.

Magdalena is having a water crisis, and there is just one general opinion about its cause. Ask a Magdalenan.

You know what has to come next, right? Right?

Seems about right.

Yes! It's the Very Large Array!

Do you know how a railroad crossing qualifies for its exempt status?

Glad you had a cool time in Magdalena! I found the little town when looking for the VLA. Fell in love with the area and have some property by Riley and old ghost town. Enjoy the rest of your travels.

Disuse.

Could be my cataracts but that pony looks funny

Great tie die. Glad you're heading north, and hopefully out of massive heat.

How is Magdalena's water situ? I thought I read that their well had run dry and they were importing water? (read that a few weeks ago I think)

Exemption as a RR track means buses, and other vehicles required to stop at RR tracks are exempt from doing so.

Been to T or C a couple times. Funky little place. Had hoped to get up into that area you are in now a couple years ago but we didn't make it. Think it was cold weather that changed our mind.

What a dish-y garage!

I always like signs like Dog Restroom but mine might not like such a barren surface. She thinks toilets should be green.

Love Magdalena, stayed for a week and want to go back. T or C is on my list to do.

The Good Luck Duck said...

Dragonfly, did you camp near Magdalena? Grace posted a NFS campground here a couple of posts ago that I'd like to look at.

Mary, people will build garages for the oddest things! Your pup would be desperate for a Comfort Station out here where green is a rare color.

Al, as I'm typing I'm freezing my bill off. In an hour I'll be peeling off anything that peels. Datil is a fun area to explore, though; Pheebs will load you in the Jeep and that'll be the day.

Peter, the situation is very bad, but the woman I talked to said help in on the way to re-dig the depleted wells. The fire station is distributing bottled water twice a day for cooking and drinking. Natives will be happy to share their porta-potties with you, but don't expect to flush.

Isn't it beautiful, Gaelyn? Yeah, it's good to be up here, even though it's in the 90's. That's manageable when there are trees and breeze.

Bonanza, it's because you're not used to Pony Crossing signs.

Thanks, Sarah and Peter, for explaining the "exempt" sign.

Ooh, Tina, that's cool! I wanted to drive out to Riley, but was warned off by road conditions.

Great photos! And a great place - looks like you are having fun, perhaps the weather is a little kinder than it was, and now life is good again!

The large array is still on my list and someday I'm going to make it there. I find it fascinating. But I sure hope I can flush when I get there. Such a cute antelope butt.

The Good Luck Duck said...

Sandie, it's kind of silly how excited I was to see it. It's like I discovered it. The VLA may let you flush, but I can't vouch for it.

Thanks Jool! Life in the saddle is good - sometimes you just get a burr wedged up in your butt.

It's all kind of like deja vu! You got a much cuter pronghorn pic, though. Did you see hundreds of them?

Sherry said...

OK so whose array is that and what are they doing out there in the far beyond with it???? Is it T&C or Mag with the array?? Not sure I want to go near that. Nice Antalope butt. You are the queen of signs. I love them all. How did you get that cow to stand just there???

Another on the long, long list of Places I Want To Visit.

I love reading your posts! Safe Travels!

Jeff Dukatt (with the tie dye) has been a friend of ours for years! Chuck and I had a tie Dyed wedding and Jeff did my dress, Chuck's shirt and all the shirts for grandkids! It was a fun wedding! Jeff is a for-real character! The lady who bought our place here has a son working at the VLA. I think you managed to photograph a very young pronghorn! Great shot! You make me wish that we had spent more time exploring Magdalena! It got hot the last day we were camped at Datil, but the nights are frosty!
Happy Trails!

Pronghorn leghorn!

Glad to see you are staying somewhat cool. Be careful this weekend, it is going to be dangerously hot. Find some AC. Maybe in a library?

Great shots of the "arrays".

Perfect photo of the cow and the "cow sign." LOL

What the heck is that beautiful critter with the big white butt that looks like a cross between a colt and a deer? Very different - I've not seen that animal yet. Long, long legs, mane on his neck, I'm really stymied. Very cute.

I just read up the comments, should have done that first, and it's an antelope? or a very young pronghorn. Or is a pronghorn the same as an antelope? I agree with one commenter, it's a very strange looking little pony. I see some research in my future. :)

This all looks great, Roxanne! I love the tie-dye guy! :)

Beautiful shot of the bambino (baby) pronghorn! But beware....all those dishes are beaming in aliens that come in the form of baby pronghorn....jest sayin'

I gotta read your blogs sooner; by the time I got ready to tell you what "exempt" means two people already beat me to it. I rarely comment because it's all been said by the time I get here.

Love the tie dyed stuff. I'm wearing a tie dyed shirt right now. Cute the baby critter.

No RR Crossing is "Exempt" to HAP Alaska... all drivers must stop or loose jobs. HAP Alaska is Holland America Princess Lines company that runs all the buses for the cruise lines. There train in the lower 48.
Oh, well, another rule I don't have to follow, since my eyes and nerves were not up to their standards. tee hee

Hey just spotted this deal at my local Cracker Barrel thought I'd pass it on"

Buy a Books-On-Audio CD at any Cracker Barrel location.
When you’re done, simply return it on your next Cracker Barrel visit. We’ll refund the purchase price, minus $3.49 for each week you’ve had it.
Sounds like a good deal to me.

The Good Luck Duck said...

Thanks, Harriet. Like a rental, if you want it to be.

Charlene, you'll find reasons to be glad that didn't work out. Although, you probably already have.

Jo, tie-dye is good for the spirit.

Linda, how do so many people know these things? The comments are the most educational thing about this blog.

Cyn, you're saying this encounter was of the third kind? I was in danger of being pronged?

Thanks, Janet! I liked him, too. He was very friendly and informative.

Hahaha Barbara! "Cow sign!" Well, I'm sure there was plenty, if I had gotten closer. I questioned my friend, Betty, who assures me that (as Cyn said) pronghorns are a kind of antelope. So this was my first!

Thanks, Chuck and Anneke! It was exciting just to be there; it's such an iconic sight.

Thanks, Merikay! I've been very lucky to be where I am this weekend. The thermometer said it was very hot, but I've been very comfortable. Both at the campsite I'll mention next, and my friend Betty's house.

Lol Nancy! You've got that stuck in my head now.

Loved your tie-dye wedding post! I wonder how many weddings Jeff can say he has outfitted? There were half a dozen shirts of his I wanted, and I'm particular about my tie-dye. Yes, nights here have been perfect for sleeping, and days have been very comfortable.

Thank you, Kimberly - that's so good to hear! And, I'll travel with care.

You'll see them, Kate.

Sherry, some family by the name of VeryLarge owns that array. They go by the nickname of NRAO. It's between Magdalena and Datil. And, it wasn't a sign, it was a mirror.

Sue, I only saw a pronghorn-full of them. I didn't even know what i was shooting, which is why I need to post my pictures here. "What was I seeing, please?"
