Just outside Datil (say "dattle") is Datil Well BLM campground. It's a little gem, and I admired its sparkle for two days.
There are trails accessible from the campground, and if you're just there for day use there is no charge. We sleepers pay $5/night. I know you're thinking Five dollars?!? Must be nice to be a Rockefeller. Yeah. But, it was great - good water and even fast wifi.

But, that's not the best part about Datil. Here's their library. I got to go inside; it's beautiful. You'll be amazed at the number of books they circulate.
But, that's not the best part about Datil. I drove into the Sawtooth Mountains.

You might as well. |
Kathy of Pie-O-Neer said she can, indeed, make a vegan pie with a little notice. You should know, though, that off-the-rack pie here is not even vegetarian.
The best part of Datil is not even the Crevice spiny lizard, although he's in the top 5.
The best part of Datil is Betty, shown here at Schaefer National Monument. She is so kind and wise, and I felt a real comfort in her company. Betty, if you're reading this (and I bet you are), hanging with you was very healing. When you told the French fry story, I didn't even recognize the sounds that came out of my face.
I hated to leave, but I was happy to see my buddy, Sue, who is continually good for a belly laugh and some good, sensible life insights. Even her latest art is hilarious.
I hope I'm not setting her up for performance anxiety.
I'm in Flagstaff now, with my cousins. Lori invited me to stay right after I knew I had to leave Tucson. In retrospect, one could say that I should have come here right away, but there are important things I wouldn't have learned if I had. One of the most important things is about you. If you think the kind or supportive thing you said was nothing, you couldn't be wronger.

Roxi, in Sex and the City, the movie (oh yes, I'm going there!), Carrie and the girls are on her "honeymoon" after she gets left at the altar. After sleeping for 2 days straight, they get her to come out into the daylight, and she asks them "when will I laugh again" to which they reply "when something is really, really funny." It's a sweet, sentimental moment. Two days later, one of the girls craps her pants, and that's when Carrie gets to laugh again, and boy howdy, does she laugh!!!
I'm glad you are in Flagstaff. I still don't understand what went wrong at the other place, where you were invited and you tried to be a good guest, but I'm glad you are with your peeps now.
Love, me
Happy to read you are with family for awhile; that really can't be beat! :) Also pleased to read that you found some friendly faces and laughs (or whatever those sounds were) along the way. Your photos, as usual, are great! Hope it's cooler in Flagstaff than the news last night indicated for AZ, NM, etc. We here are cool and soggy, and there's more rain coming. Beats snow, I guess! :( Enjoy Flagstaff!
Ahhhhh some kindness came your way!
This pleases me very much.
Pooh pooh on mean people. I'm starting to think Kentucky has more than our share of mean people. One was mean to me this morning!
Mean people suck.
People like Betty rock this world!
LOL! I remember that scene! Yes. That's just about right. No, I don't understand, either. And, I'm glad, too. Hugs!
Thank you, Karen. i don't know what the temp is here, but it feels good on many levels.
Oh Mary, I'm sorry you were meaned upon. A pox upon them! It helps me to think about how many people are very kind compared with how many people are mean. But, the Mean Minority sure can poo in your oatmeal.
<3
Hey Foxy Roxi! I'm super happy you're with your peeps now. No reference to you being a duck, although now that I think of it, that was clever of me :P
Hope you get your inner batteries recharged by getting lots of squeezes and some home cookin!
Love ya!
Nellie
One of the things I love about traveling (especially through small towns) is checking out local libraries. In this cookie-cutter world, it's fun to find a clean well-lighted place in which to hang out all day.
Glad to hear you are comforted by the much-deserved support you've received!
Yayy you and Betty! Your choices seem to have paid off. I think there's very seldom a RIGHT choice...mostly there are just DIFFERENT choices. Enjoy your peeps! - Marianne in "the Burg"
I love this. This is a keeper and I will have to forward it to everyone I know. lol
Enjoyed having you visit. Come again when it is green around here and all the wildflowers are blooming.
Betty
Marianne, I think you and the Mid-Life Cruiser would agree on that. So would I, now that I think of it. Yes! I will enjoy.
I agree, Kim. I love libraries, and I judge towns by theirs. And, thank you!
Right on, MLC!
Betty, does your login mean "tostada"? I would have expected a Lobo login. Okay! See you then.
You should ask Sue to paint that "congested" one.
So happy things are looking up for you. May this trend continue!
I'm so glad you've moved on, in many ways. Enjoy Flagstaff and family. Seems it should be a bit cooler. Chill!
YaY!
Yay! is right, Geri!
Thanks, Lynda. Me, too! It feels good here today.
Thank you, Lisa! I think it will.
Coming right up, Cozy!
Ha Charlene! You're right - that's the kind of irony she might enjoy.
amen!!!!! glad your in flag maybe ill see ya around, hold on to what you got girl!
So glad the support felt as warm and fuzzy as it was intended to be. AND that you hung out with some real friends. Hope those fires don't come your way. I've been trying to send the too much rain here west for weeks. I seem to have no pull with the weather or is that push that I don't have? PS Did you have pie???
Very nice blog post, Roxanne. I'm glad that you've had several good visits with folks in a row now...Betty, me, your cousins. Yay! That's the way life is supposed to be.
Thanks for coming to see me. I had a great time. No, your recognition of my sense of humor and stuff won't give me performance anxiety. I can't help but laugh and be funny. Even, like, in church during the silent prayer. Now I'm slapping that humor on canvas, and I've never had more fun!
I want to pet that lizard. Did you have them make you a vegan pie? Flagstaff is a good place to be. Great hiking, but you know that.
Now I think we should all hear the french fry story!
Lots of vegan dessert options in Flagstaff - think New Frontiers warrants a visit, and Natural Grocers.
Roxi those rocks, rock and the lizard is too, cool for words.
It is great to hear you are at a place where they treat you like family because after all.... u r.
I don't know about your cousins but I have some crazy ones and you know what, they are my favs.
Never look back, it keeps you from seeing what's right in front of you.
Enjoy you respite in Flags.
Annie, I wish I could tell it, but it requires Betty's punchline gesture. Yes, for sure about those places - I've been imagining a shopping trip to NG and a lunch trip to NF. The gang here went there for lunch, but I stayed back and chilled.
Nancy, the lizard would probably let you. I saw two, and each seemed very curious about me. A little grossed out by my skin, maybe. I didn't have them make me a pie, because I was there last-minute. Plus I didn't want a whole pie. Don't make me say in writing that I ate pie anyway.
Yes! Yay! Okay, glad you won't freeze up in church. You're the friend who got me in trouble every Sunday.
Sherry, thanks for the effort. Could you try a little harder, though? I just felt a few sprinkles of your intention. It's good to hang out where i've been hanging out.
ld, I'll see you in town. I'll be wearing that dress, you'll be wearing the ____ so I'll recognize you right away.
Never look back, it keeps you from seeing what's right in front of you. Holy Pin Feathers, Harriet! That is so true I felt it in my solar plexus. GOOD advice.
I really want to go to Pie Town. I saw a series of depression era photos from Pie Town a few years ago that we're really cool. Can't wait to go there this Fall. mmmm, pie.
Have fun in Flagstaff!
Pam (not the nasty one.)
Glad you're having fun and spending time with people that appreciate your wonderfulness!
You drove right by and didn't say hi? Well I never. Enjoy Flag.
Me again. Just heard on the news that a bad storm blew through Elephant Butte and destroyed three RVs! So glad you weren't there. Scary.
Pam
Flag should feel a bit cooler and really like their NG, better prices than Frontiers. Enjoy good company. Maybe you'll make it to the NR.
OMG Not-Nasty-Pam! I didn't hear about that! WOW. No one was hurt?
Yes, I think Nina from WheelingIt pointed me toward those photos, too. Russell Lee? They sell a book at Pie-O-Neer that features a lot of those photos.
Gaelyn, I've given the NR more than a passing thought. Lots of those excellent, small spots would be perfect for me, and I can get remote enough (I think) to use my travel a-commode-ations.
Sorry, Jo. It was a fast trip and a last-minute decision not to stay in town.
Thanks Cyndi! xo <-- share this with Stumpy
I love Flag, making a trip there the first week in August...there is going to be a hummingbird festival in Sedona the first weekend in August, maybe you should come down the hill and take a peek with that great camera of yours...Nothing like family to put the pieces in place, hope you stay a while and soak up some lovin...All the best to you, your adventure so far has been amazing and it has been great to tag along with you...
The sitting room looks comfy. Did you make or buy it? I want one :)
Oh. I found habient online. Sooo cool.
Really, Shirlene? A hummingbird festival? I'm lousy at bird shots, but that would be a lot of fun. I'm glad you're following along, too.
Saunter, it makes a big difference in comfort. I like sleeping with it on, too - it feels very open and airy.
It was a very nasty 5 minute hurricane here in T or C as well as Elephant Butte. One RV blown in the water, 5 others turned over some totally destroyed. https://www.facebook.com/ElephantButte5Tons?hc_location=stream
Chuck and I are fine and the MotherShip is still standing! I have been thru several FL hurricanes and this storm was as bad as any of them, just a very abbreviated 5 minute storm!
Yep, the Hummingbird Festival in Sedona is a wonderful little activity....Stop by our booth and we will have a little something for you...really.
Too bad you didn't come and join us at the Rubber Tramp Rendzvous. You would have liked the people, and there was at least one living out of their car.
If you feel like taking a drive in the forest one day, stop by and see us. We're just 8 miles from Flag and would love to meet you.
Gayle
Love that Lizard! It is good that you "sound" happier!
Great photos of the Datil. Looks like one of the cute little towns in America. Love the rocks!!
Enjoy your visit with your cousins!
Oh, look at you -- you were in our (sometimes) back yard!! (I'll bet you guessed that because of the clue I left you...signing my comments "Renee from Datil") I'm sure you picked up on that. I LOVE it out there -- the mountains, the blue blue sky, the HUGE sky, the non-humidity... I'm so glad you enjoyed the area for a little while, but I'm sure it's cooler where you are now.
Renee (from guess where????)
I eventually picked up on that, Renee! But, you weren't there this time, right? I really like your town. It has great appeal.
Pam, it's very beautiful there. I will enjoy being here in Flag, too.
Thanks, Nan!
No, not there now. Still in the not-as-sweaty-as-St.Louis Midwest. We try to get back to the Datil area in the fall. If we get there by middle to end of September, we get to hear the elk bugle all day long. Spent Christmas 2012 there; after 8 years, I had a hankerin' for a white Christmas. I must have done something right last year, because we had a few snowfalls...one on Christmas Eve! Perfect!
Renee (that Datil gal again)
That lizard reminds me of the "horned" toads that we chased as children...haven't seen any of them in a good while.
