Just outside Datil (say "dattle") is Datil Well BLM campground. It's a little gem, and I admired its sparkle for two days.
There are trails accessible from the campground, and if you're just there for day use there is no charge. We sleepers pay $5/night. I know you're thinking Five dollars?!? Must be nice to be a Rockefeller. Yeah. But, it was great - good water and even fast wifi.

But, that's not the best part about Datil. Here's their library. I got to go inside; it's beautiful. You'll be amazed at the number of books they circulate.

Kathy of Pie-O-Neer said she can, indeed, make a vegan pie with a little notice. You should know, though, that off-the-rack pie here is not even vegetarian.
The best part of Datil is not even the Crevice spiny lizard, although he's in the top 5.
The best part of Datil is Betty, shown here at Schaefer National Monument. She is so kind and wise, and I felt a real comfort in her company. Betty, if you're reading this (and I bet you are), hanging with you was very healing. When you told the French fry story, I didn't even recognize the sounds that came out of my face.
I hated to leave, but I was happy to see my buddy, Sue, who is continually good for a belly laugh and some good, sensible life insights. Even her latest art is hilarious.
I hope I'm not setting her up for performance anxiety.
I'm in Flagstaff now, with my cousins. Lori invited me to stay right after I knew I had to leave Tucson. In retrospect, one could say that I should have come here right away, but there are important things I wouldn't have learned if I had. One of the most important things is about you. If you think the kind or supportive thing you said was nothing, you couldn't be wronger.

Roxi, in Sex and the City, the movie (oh yes, I'm going there!), Carrie and the girls are on her "honeymoon" after she gets left at the altar. After sleeping for 2 days straight, they get her to come out into the daylight, and she asks them "when will I laugh again" to which they reply "when something is really, really funny." It's a sweet, sentimental moment. Two days later, one of the girls craps her pants, and that's when Carrie gets to laugh again, and boy howdy, does she laugh!!!
I'm glad you are in Flagstaff. I still don't understand what went wrong at the other place, where you were invited and you tried to be a good guest, but I'm glad you are with your peeps now.

One of the things I love about traveling (especially through small towns) is checking out local libraries. In this cookie-cutter world, it's fun to find a clean well-lighted place in which to hang out all day.

I love Flag, making a trip there the first week in August...there is going to be a hummingbird festival in Sedona the first weekend in August, maybe you should come down the hill and take a peek with that great camera of yours...Nothing like family to put the pieces in place, hope you stay a while and soak up some lovin...All the best to you, your adventure so far has been amazing and it has been great to tag along with you...

Chuck and I are fine and the MotherShip is still standing! I have been thru several FL hurricanes and this storm was as bad as any of them, just a very abbreviated 5 minute storm!

Too bad you didn't come and join us at the Rubber Tramp Rendzvous. You would have liked the people, and there was at least one living out of their car.

Oh, look at you -- you were in our (sometimes) back yard!! (I'll bet you guessed that because of the clue I left you...signing my comments "Renee from Datil") I'm sure you picked up on that. I LOVE it out there -- the mountains, the blue blue sky, the HUGE sky, the non-humidity... I'm so glad you enjoyed the area for a little while, but I'm sure it's cooler where you are now.

No, not there now. Still in the not-as-sweaty-as-St.Louis Midwest. We try to get back to the Datil area in the fall. If we get there by middle to end of September, we get to hear the elk bugle all day long. Spent Christmas 2012 there; after 8 years, I had a hankerin' for a white Christmas. I must have done something right last year, because we had a few snowfalls...one on Christmas Eve! Perfect!
